See's Candies Looks East May 4, 2013 Berkshire Hathaway company See's Candies has stocked their stall in Omaha’s CenturyLink Convention Center with peanut brittle and fudge, expecting to sell hundreds of boxes during Berkshire's annual meeting.
Last year, See's sold 10,010 pounds of candy at the meeting. (It's also the candy that Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger will be chomping as they answer questions at Saturday's annual meeting.)
But See's, a 91-year-old West Coast candy company that Berkshire bought in 1972 for $25 million, has bigger ambitions than the sales it will notch up this weekend. See's expects around $410 million in 2013 sales, up roughly 4% from last year, See's chief Brad Kinstler said.
The longtime Berkshire executive, who has been CEO of See's since 2006, shared his plans for the company ahead of the weekend's events:

In the hallowed Bon Bon Room of the See's Candies factory, Juani Meza, a hair-netted, white-coated employee
of 38 years, hand-dipped a single buttercream center into warm icing she had earlier dyed the precise
maple-sugar-beige as a color chart on the wall. Next, with rapid-fire finesse, Meza jiggled excess icing off
the morsel with a slotted utensil, pressed in half a nut and topped it with a distinctive swoosh - all of
which seemed crazily labor-intensive since the dainty Maple Pecan Bon Bon would eventually be devoured in a
bite.

is one of Los Angeles' sweetest institutions, serving up treats made locally since 1921. The company prides itself on sourcing as many of its ingredients as possible from California, making many candies -- including recipes created by the store's real namesake, Mary See -- by hand, and employing a loyal workforce who stick with the company year after year.
But those are cold details in comparison to the chocolatey, creamy, warm, sweet reality of being lucky enough to step inside the doors of the See's L.A. factory -- a treat most don't get to enjoy, except vicariously through tales like ours of a visit to where the magic, and hard work, happens.
